The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces (HANSHARO in Japanese) were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015 as one of the “ sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution”. These furnaces were built in the closing days of the SAMURAI era to make iron cannon to defend the Japanese coast against the western threat. Thanks to this iron making technology, Japan was able to achieve a rapid Industrial Revolution in just half a century.
The Egawa Residence was the family home of Lord Egawa Hidetatsu who was the governor of this area. Egawa Hidetatsu built the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces in 1854. He played an especially important role in Japan’s history at the end of the 19th century.
